Rangers and volunteers are still searching for a lion that escaped from the Karoo National Park, near Beaufort-West. SanParks says since the lion escaped, it has killed and eaten an Eland on a farm which is situated close to the park.
SanParks General Manager of Media Relations, Rey Thakhuli, says the lion escaped last weekend by digging a hole underneath the fence of the park.
Thakhuli says the discovery of the Eland’s carcass will probably lead them to the whereabouts of the lion.
Thakhuli says: “This kill, most of the carcass has been consumed. This really has increased our chances of locating the lion. A lion with a full belly is likely to sleep for some time and lazy around. So this will work to our advantage and we can gain some time on the lion. Up to this far the rangers have covered an area of about eleven point eight kilometres. We are still speaking to the residents of Beaufort West to be extra careful if they see the lion.”
