Read full description of the books Blue Coffee: Poems 1985-1996:This book contains a collection of short poems by Adrian Mitchell. However, for this review I want to focus on one of the poems in the book which is called ‘Elephant Eternity. This poem has many features which can be reviewed in a KS2 classroom environment. The author makes great use of similes and metaphors throughout the poem and the use of repetition really adds to the effect of this poem.
Although this is a short poem, it has a great deal of content which opens up range of opportunities for its use in a KS2 classroom. The poem can be used to teach children about similes and metaphors. It can also be used to show the children how repetition can be used in writing to add effect. There is also room for discussion about alliteration as we can see this is used in the title of the poem.
I personally would use this poem in a year 5 or 6 class for a writing activity. After reading the poem, I will get the children to write their own poem about an animal of their choice. I will also ask them to include the features they identified in this poem such is alliteration when they do their own writing.
Overall, this is a wonderful poem which gives the reader a feeling of serenity and it would be an excellent resource in the classroom.
