Read full description of the books The Congo and Other Poems:

I have an original print, I believe, or at least a print from the time period he was alive, 1930's if I remember correctly. I need to double check the date. In any case, I love original prints of older books for this reason: it allows a reader to see how the author really intended the layout to be. In the poem 'The Congo,' (which is said to be a racist work, though it isn't- it's more a piece illustrating 'white fascination' with 'the exotic' and foreign qualities of a 'strange' culture), for instance, comes with reading instructions in the margins as to how to pace reading the lines, when to whisper, etc. I found this fascinating, since it was clearly a work meant to be read aloud with a deliberateness Lindsay specified. It was a curious thing to me, since Spoken Word is coming into its own right now in a way. I could use the trite cliche, this book is 'ahead of its time,' and I will. It's a great book to study for its historical value in themes addressed, as well as the sort of interplay of styles evident throughout the text.
